Find a publication without turning an announcement into a current offer
Back to the guideThree obtained bulletins provide different entry points into socio-legal scholarship. This small index points to exact source pages, preserves their dates and separates a publication listing from a prize record or an invitation. It is a new editorial reading aid, not a new work by the people named.
- Choose a question before searching: find a cited title, a dated programme announcement or evidence of a prize. These require different passages.
- Open the cited source page and copy its title, author/editor, date and publication status as written. Do not silently turn “scheduled” or “in submission” into “published”.
- Use the title as a library-catalogue query, then verify the edition and publisher in the catalogue or publisher record. The bulletin is evidence of its announcement, not proof of present stock.
- Keep the page citation with your note. For current membership, admissions or prize conditions, obtain the current association or institution notice instead of using a 2006–2009 form.
| Field | Example or check |
|---|---|
| Autumn 2006, bulletin 42, page 8 | The publications section lists Gillian Balfour and Elizabeth Comack (eds.), Criminalizing Women: Gender and (In)justice in Neo-Liberal Times (2006). Search by title plus editors; retain the source year. |
| Autumn 2008, page 7 | The announcements describe York’s MA in Socio-Legal Studies with its first students arriving in September 2008. This is a dated programme notice, not a 2026 admissions offer. The document’s cover/header numbering is inconsistent; cite season, year and page rather than silently correcting it. |
| Autumn 2009, page 10 | A caption identifies Constance Backhouse as winner of the 2008 CLSA Book Prize. Prize year and bulletin year differ; do not relabel it a 2009 award. |
| Autumn 2009, page 11 | Amanda Glasbeek, Feminized Justice: The Toronto Women’s Court, 1913–34 (2009), appears in Recent Publications. The same page distinguishes a different item as “in submission”; retain that status. |
| Reading note to reuse | Question __; bulletin/season/year __; page __; exact title/name __; stated status __; later catalogue check __; unresolved point __. |
