Your next scholarly conversation

Participation, presentations and funding preparation for graduate students.

Reading note · CLSA / ACDS

Graduate students from any discipline engaged in socio-legal scholarship are encouraged to participate in annual and mid-year meetings, present papers, chair panels and submit work to the journal. Two graduate student representatives sit on the Association’s board.

Prepare a conference presentation

Write one research question. Select the evidence needed to answer it. Explain your method, then finish with your argument and a question for discussion. Rehearse with the organiser’s actual time limit and provide readable slides.

Plan travel funding carefully

The Association describes limited reimbursement after the annual conference. Applicants must be members and retain original receipts and boarding passes or tickets. The available amount varies and is unlikely to cover every expense. Confirm the current call and application procedure with the graduate representatives before committing costs.

A reimbursement folder

Keep the event confirmation, proof of membership, itemised receipts, travel tickets, a clear expense table and the instructions for the relevant funding round. Never assume a previous year’s deadline or maximum still applies.

Put it into practice

Two practical guides below provide a timed presentation outline and a complete travel-funding file with a worked budget. They are preparation aids; current event rules and funding calls determine eligibility.

Build a presentation by stating a question, selecting evidence, developing an argument and inviting discussion.
