Reading note · CLSA / ACDS

2024 annual meeting — venue update of 10 May records information for a particular institution, meeting or decision. Use its date and context before drawing a conclusion about present arrangements.

Read with context

Identify who issued the document, what action or decision it records, and the period to which it applies. Separate a proposed action from a confirmed decision. For a policy, appointment or venue, seek the institution’s latest notice before relying on it.

The later update of 10 May 2024 changes the meeting venue to UQAM following the McGill law faculty strike. Read the update alongside the original call; the original McGill location should not be used as the final venue.

Update only the fields a venue notice actually changes

This notice resolves the conditional location in the May 2024 bulletin. It changes the venue while retaining the intended meeting dates; it does not establish every detail of travel, registration or room allocation.

  • The notice says Congress organizers notified the association on 9 May that the original McGill conference space could not be provided.Source page 1
  • It announces a change from McGill to UQAM to maintain the meeting from 15 to 17 June 2024.Source page 1
  • It says an updated programme would be posted as further information became available.Source page 1
Old venue → UQAM confirmed → Dates retained → Programme update
Example: change log for the meeting
  1. 01Old venue
  2. 02UQAM confirmed
  3. 03Dates retained
  4. 04Programme update

The completed change log distinguishes a confirmed move from details still pending in that notice. It is a source-reading exercise for a past meeting, not a current travel alert.

Example: change log for the meeting

  1. Record the old and new venue together so the change is explicit.
  2. Keep the dates unchanged only because the notice explicitly retains them.
  3. Leave room assignments and other unconfirmed logistics open until the updated programme supplies them.

[Version française ci-dessous] Annual Meeting Change of venue to UQAM: New Update regarding the strike at Faculty of Law, McGill University, and Congress CLSA was planning to hold its annual conference at McGill during Congress 2024. We have been working with the McGill Faculty of Law and McGill Law professors since last summer. The Association of McGill Professors of Law (AMPL) is currently on strike. We repeatedly informed Congress Organizers that under no circumstances could we cross a picket line and that many of those participating in our conference are not in a position to legally access our original venue. Congress Organizers notified us yesterday (May 9) that “given your membership is composed of McGill law faculty who, during the AMPL strike, cannot legally enter McGill campus buildings, we agree that we are not able to fulfil our commitment to provide CLSA with a space for its conference at McGill”. In order to maintain the 2024 CLSA Annual Meeting from June 15 to 17 we will have to change venue from McGill to UQAM (about 2 km from McGill Law). We are very happy to announce that UQAM Faculté de science politique et de droit and their Département des sciences juridiques will be able to receive us in such short notice, and in solidarity with us and with McGill Law professors. We continue to do our best to keep our Annual Meeting as scheduled so as not to affect the ongoing travel arrangements of participants. We will post an updated version of our program reflecting such changes and will post updates as more information is available.
