Reading note · CLSA / ACDS
The minutes record the approval of the agenda, officer reports and election-related business on 27 May 2023. Compare a motion with its recorded outcome: a subject listed for discussion is not automatically an adopted decision. The filename of a second identical copy refers to 2024, but its internal date and byte hash identify the same 2023 minutes.
A practical evidence note
Record the person or item, the source section, its date, and whether it is a plan, report or decision. Locate a later publication or record before making a present-day claim. Do not infer missing results from a name on an agenda.

Tremendous conference as part of the midwinter meeting – thanks to the team. A fun time was had by all but also a rich intellectual experience. So wonderful to be back with people and hear about people’s work. Looking forward to more of the same. Membership strong. Thriving and active group. Excellent journal in William’s capable hands. Everything moving along nicely with the organization. Many people within the executive either have their terms ending or are leaving the country for exciting opportunities. Open positions – Joshua Shaw as Grad member at large and treasurer – cannot continue because international residency. Sara Ross has run conferences for several years moving on to new challenges. Up from 132. Biggest driver – return to in-person conferences, enthusiasm for in-person scholarly engagement. Big surges leading up to midwinter in Brantford. 6 emeritus. 85 students. 148 regular. 18 post-doc/sessional members. We have a mix of stalwarts and brief-members. 2018-19/ big numbers of the brief numbers. 275 members who have not renewed – they are a good pond for future recruitment. Geographic membership broader than board. All provinces except PEI represented. Disciplinary homes. Approximately half of membership based in law faculties – incredible disciplinary diversity. The commitment to interdisciplinarity continues to drive membership. Early days – political scientists were drivers – now, only a few. Now – sociolegal studies departments (huge growth – now about 40 members), 11 members from Criminology, 10 History, 22 in Sociology. And literally dozens of other disciplines. Also significant number of practitioner/independent scholar members. 45 universities. Our fees go to provide student support. VP Conference Report – Sara Ross Thank you to: Dean Donna Young of Lincoln Alexander Law School at TMU - as our keynote Palma’s work as ground coordinator invaluable Osgoode’s sponsorship of four RA’s very helpful, and also support for final cocktails. Sonia Lawrence as CALT liaison Members of conference committee: developing call for papers, review abstracts, planning panels. 150 participants. Great numbers. Presidents’ Reception on 28th. Go get drinks from Congress. A key challenge this year – with the pandemic – what do we want to do about hybrid participation? Decided it was important. First hybrid Congress so it was an option – while we can have a lot of remotely accessible options – very expensive when it’s a part of Congress. (Plus cost to attend). Next year Congress at McGill May 8-17 As part of the Federation of HSS – many new initiatives. Publication funding etc. Lots of options for hosting outside Congress as well, potentially: next year’s conference, and midwinter. Welcome to Joao whose capable hands give us all confidence. Much appreciation for Sara’s 9 years of fantastic service to the CLSA Board. Treasurer’s Report – No new report and no major changes since midwinter. Outgoing treasurer will manage expenses related to Congress before handover. Motion for waiver of public accountant auditor. We feel confident that this is not a needed. Lyndsay, Nicole – brief discussion to confirm there is no legal requirements around audit. Confirmed that the only req, from Companies Act, is that we have this motion. Passed unanimously. Communication Director Bulletin has come out. If members have anything they need to share please contact Sarah Turnbull or email address on the website. Much appreciated. Grad Student Report Unavailable. Grad students meeting separately to confirm student reps. Prize Announcements. Bruce, Lori, Pierre, Nicole – Book Prize Committee – tough slog – got books late! Late deliveries. Honourable mention is: Andrew Stobo Sniderman and Douglas Sanderson, Valley of the Birdtail: An Indian Reserve, a White Town, and the Road to Reconciliation (HarperCollins 2022). Jim Phillips, Philip Girard, R. Blake Brown, History of Law in Canada, Volume 2: Law for the New Dominion, 1867-1914 (Osgoode Society 2022). This committee is fun. You read books outside of what you’d normally read.
