Text section 1

Canadian Journal of Law and Society / Revue Canadienne Droit et Société Memo for the Canadian Law and Society Association / Mémo pour l’Association canadienne droit et société Transition to Gold Open Access publishing model / Transition au modèle de publication de libre accès « voie dorée » Le français suit. Exciting news: The Canadian Journal of Law and Society will be open access in 2023! In May 2022, the Canadian Law and Society Association signed a new 5-year renewable contract to continue publishing the Canadian Journal of Law and Society with Cambridge University Press. To reflect current industry and funding trends and address environmental concerns over the production and distribution of print publications, CJLS will be moving to a Gold Open Access publishing model in 2023. For authors, this signifies that all articles accepted for publication for forthcoming volumes will be published with a non-exclusive Gold Open Access CC-BY licence (see here for more detail). Most Corresponding authors will have their Article Processing Charge (APC) covered by a transformative agreement (check here to see if your institution is covered by an agreement), but any author not covered by a transformative agreement or other funding will have the APC waived. See this FAQ for more information. For readers, under the Gold Open Access model, CJLS will undergo a gradual transition to online only publishing, without print and without traditional subscribers. To ease the CLSA membership into this new model, there will be an “opt in” option for print copies for up to two years. In other words, CJLS will continue providing print copies for CLSA members who request them after the start of the new contract in 2023 and up until 2025, unless “opt in” numbers indicate that the membership is ready to move to online only earlier. Practically, starting in 2023, there will be no charges for online access for all members (student members, emeritus members, and any full members who “opt out” of print), while the “opt in” option for print copies will be tied to a per member charge of $50 USD. Stay tuned for more details about “opting in” and “opting out”!
