President’s Report The CLSA was reborn – in a corporate sense at least – on June 15, 2015, when we successfully transitioned to the Canada Not-for-profit Corporations Act (S.C. 2009, c. 23 for the lawyers out there). No cake and candles, but we do now have a handsome photocopied certificate of continuance from Industry Canada attesting to the event. The exercise allowed us to update our bylaws – they are available for your scrutiny on the website. The basic structure of your association remains much the same, though now amendments to the bylaws follow a more streamlined process, which will allow us to keep them current more easily. Thanks to Lyndsay Campbell and Ronke Odumosu-Ayanu, whose insights and expertise made the transition as smooth as it was. Our website is undergoing an updating as well, and when the new version goes live shortly, it will be easier to find key information from the home page and to keep your membership information updated. Finally, a reminder of upcoming events in the short and long term. Our winter meeting will take place at the University of Waterloo on January 16- 17, 2016, organized by Rashmee Singh and Emily Snyder. Further details are in this bulletin. Our annual meeting will be during Congress at the University of Calgary on May 28-30, 2016. Organizers Lyndsay Campbell and Nicole O’Byrne have big plans for our first return to Alberta in some time. Further into the future, start planning now for our joint meeting with the LSA in Mexico City (June 20-23, 2017), a second joint CLSA-LSA meeting in Toronto (June 7-10, 2018), and our joint meeting with LSAANZ and the SLSA in Sydney (Australia, not Nova Scotia) in December 2018 (dates to be announced). I wish you all a good end of term, and hope to see many of you in Waterloo or Calgary. Eric Reiter CLSA President 3

Report on the CLSA Annual Meeting This year in Ottawa at the CLSA’s annual conference we had a program that attested to the diversity and imagination of socio-legal scholars across Canada. We collaborated again with the Canadian Association of Law Teachers had co-hosted a joint banquet. Two events in particular deserve special mention here. Our popular graduate student’s workshop took place at the beginning of our conference. This year marked the 30th anniversary of the Canadian Journal of Law and Society, and we will be celebrated the milestone in style on the evening of June 4th. 5
