President’s Report CLSA Report, Spring 2017 In January, we held a highly successful midwinter meeting at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton, which was oriented generally around the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s recommendations with respect to law and legal education. Nicole O’Byrne deserves thanks and congratulations for putting together this remarkable conference. The spring of 2017 finds us gearing up for the next annual conference, to be held June 20-23 in Mexico City in connection with the Law and Society Assocation. The theme – which has turned out to be extremely timely – is “Walls, Borders, and Bridges: Law and Society in an Inter-Connected World.” At least two hundred Canadian and CLSA scholars are on the program; a kind of mini- program to these panels and papers is posted on our website, and we welcome news of any other people or panels that should be noted. We anticipate an excellent conference. Our annual general meeting will be held from 2-4 pm on Wednesday, June 21, and we hope it will be well attended. I will soon be sending out the official announcement of the meeting, which will include information about how to participate remotely. The most important business of the AGM is to elect new members to the board. A great set of CLSA names have already been put forward, and we continue to welcome nominations and self-nominations. Nicole O’Byrne’s term as Vice- President (Conferences) also comes to an end at that time, and we thank her for her service. Planning has also begun for the 2018 annual conference, which will again be held in conjunction with the Law and Society Association, but this time in Toronto in June 2018. LSA President Kim Lane Scheppele and I having been working closely to assemble the program and local arrangements committees, which will be chaired by Mariana Valverde and Audrey Macklin respectively. Our intention and hope is that the meeting will draw together the scholarship of Canadian and American socio-legal communities and those of international scholars in ways that are mutually illuminating and theoretically and methodologically enriching. As well, the Canadian Law and Society Association is planning to participate in the annual meeting of the Law and Society Association Australia New Zealand (LSAANZ) at the University of Wollongong in December 2018. Our annual conference in 2019 will be back with Congress, at UBC. The CLSA aims to provide support to socio-legal initiatives in Canada. Initiatives that have recently received the CLSA’s support are the opening conference of ESGRREW, the “Workshop on Representations and Rights of/for the Environment,” held at Concordia University on April 12 and 13, 2017; and the “Canada’s Legal Past: Future Directions in Canadian Legal History” conference, to be held at the University of Calgary July 16-18, 2017. These are eventful years. The energy of our socio-legal community is inspiring. See you in Mexico City. Lyndsay Campbell-President of the CLSA 2

Graduate Student Representative Election As the Annual Meeting is fast approaching, so is the election for the ACDS/CLSA Graduate Student Representative position. This is a two-year mandate, overlapping with the mandate of the other Graduate Student Representative. If you interested in submitting your candidacy for this position, please email Sabrina at acdsgradsclsa@gmail.com, with a short bio and statement of interest, before May 19th, 2017. The election will be held through online voting, from May 22nd to June 2nd. Please note that you must be a CLSA member to act as Graduate Student Representative. The program will assign graduate students to faculty mentors based on their common interests. These groups will then meet during the conference to discuss topics such as: research funding, professionalization, job preparation, and new directions in law and ethnography. Please don’t forget to keep all receipts and boarding passes! Applications for student funding for the Mexico City Meeting are closed, but stay tuned for future funding opportunities for other future ACDS/CLSA events. CLSA Mentorship Program Based on the feedback we received on the pilot Mentorship Program last year, we are revising this strategy into a ‘living document’ resource, where graduate students and established faculty and scholars alike provide their contact information and the categories of expertise that they would be willing to advise about. We will be announcing the revised format of the Mentorship Program at the ACDS/CLSA Annual General Meeting during the Mexico City Meeting, on Wednesday, June 21st, from 2pm to 3:30pm. Comments, questions, suggestions? Please feel welcome in emailing us comments, questions, or suggestions about how we can further represent your interests within the ACDS/CLSA as your Graduate Student Representatives, at acdsgradsclsa@gmail.com. Canadian Journal of Law and Society Editor’s Report Editors’ Report December 2016 saw the publication of a very rich volume 31:3, with fascinating articles touching on issues of taxation, regulation, homelessness and youth, marriage, the legal profession, evidence law, and Aboriginal knowledge in Gladue courts. To stay up to date on leading socio- legal scholarship, please also have a look at the excellent book reviews found in that issue of the journal: https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/canadian-journal-of-law-and-society-la-revue- canadienne-droit-et-societe/latest-issue We are very much looking forward to the imminent publication of the first issue of 32:1, which will contain an equally rich offering of cutting-edge socio-legal research. Many of the forthcoming articles are already available on FirstView, on the journal website, if you want an early preview. Summer will bring the publication of our annual special issue, this year guest edited by Jennifer M. Kilty (Criminology - University of Ottawa) and Rebecca Bromwich (Law & Legal Studies - Carleton University) and entitled Law, Politics, and Rights in the Ashley Smith Case. The editorial board met in January and was pleased with both the scholarly and financial health of the Journal. Met with an embarrassment of riches in the form of a host of excellent proposals, we were also delighted to select our 2018 special issue: Professor Adelle Blackett (Faculty of Law – McGill University) will be editing an issue on transnational labour law and development. The CJLS/RCDS is always pleased to receive submissions of new manuscripts for consideration for publication. Please visit our website for authors’ guidelines and to submit a manuscript. For up-to-date CJLS/RCDS news, latest issues, and new articles in FirstView, visit https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/canadian-journal-of-law-and-society-la-revue- canadienne-droit-et-societe On behalf of the staff and editorial board of the CJLS/RCDS, we wish you a happy and productive summer, Benjamin L Berger, Editor-in-Chief (English Manuscripts) Joane Martel, Editor-in-Chief (French Manuscripts) 8

Financial Transfers Between Spouses on Divorce: Logics of Need, Restitution, or Compensation?
