President’s Report The CLSA has played a large role in my professional life and I am honoured to be the new president. As a graduate student representative many years ago, I benefitted immeasurably from the sage wisdom of Mariana Valverde, Kirsten Kramar and Richard Weisman. When the prospect of an academic position seemed out of reach, CLSA board members such as Debra Parkes encouraged me and advised me about how to give a job talk and how to write a cover letter. I am sincerely grateful for the mentorship I have received through the CLSA, and I am committed to promoting further opportunities for graduate students who are interested in law and society scholarship. In these challenging times, it is more important than ever for interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary scholars to share perspectives and foster inclusivity and pluralism. When Imelda Perley, the elder-‐in-‐residence at the University of New Brunswick, spoke at the 2017 CLSA mid-‐winter meeting in Fredericton, she called on law and society scholars to follow the path of Piluwitahasuwawsuwakon – a Wolastoqiyik term that means “allowing your thinking to change so that action will follow in a good way toward truth.” At a time when the truth and the rule of law are under constant attack, it is more important than ever that law and society scholars challenge accepted wisdom and promote understanding and dialogue. As ever, there are several exciting opportunities for CLSA members over the next few months. In December, a group of CLSA members will be presenting papers at the Law and Society Association of Australia and New Zealand at its annual conference at the University of Wollongong. The conference theme is “Inclusion, Exclusion and Democracy.” This is an excellent opportunity for our members to present their work and promote Canadian law and society scholarship. As well, CLSA Secretary Shauna Labman and VP Conferences Emily Snyder are organizing the mid-‐winter meeting in Winnipeg, 19-‐20 January 2019. Our next annual conference will be held 3-‐5 June 2019 at the University of British Columbia as part of the Congress of the Social Sciences and Humanities (the CFP can be found on the CLSA website: https://www.acds-‐ clsa.org/?q=en/content/call-‐papers-‐annual-‐meeting-‐ubc-‐vancouver-‐2019). We will be coordinating our annual conference with the Canadian Association of Law Teachers. Our program committee has been working closely with CALT President David Wiseman, and I am pleased to announce CLSA/CALT will be hosting a plenary session on the new joint degree program in Canadian common law and Indigenous legal orders (JD/JID) at the University of Victoria. Professor Jeremy Webber will give a keynote address about the challenges involved in developing the program and provide some lessons for people who are interested in Indigenizing the academy. Elizabeth Mancke, Canada Research Chair in Atlantic Studies, has accepted our invitation to give a keynote address on historical and constitutional interpretations of the Royal Proclamation, 1763. I would like to thank Lyndsay Campbell, Doug Harris, Sara Ross and Emily Snyder for their boundless energy and enthusiasm for conference organization and promotion. We look forward to seeing your proposals! 2

On a final note, I would like to thank Eric Reiter, Jula Hughes, Joane Martel, Marie-‐Eve Sylvestre and Dayna Scott, the editorial team at the Canadian Journal of Law and Society. Their tireless and often unheralded efforts provide the intellectual foundation for the CLSA. I would also like to welcome our newest board members, Howie Kislowicz, Robert Hamilton, Michelle Lawrence and Joanne Prince. And we all owe an enormous debt of gratitude to Lyndsay Campbell for her tireless service as President (2016-‐2018) and her continuing commitment as our communications officer. See you all in Vancouver! Nicole O’Byrne, Ph.D.

In conjunction with the Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences, the CLSA Program Committee calls for papers that address the theme of this year’s Congress: “Circles of Conversation.” At a time when truth and the rule of law are being challenged by people in positions of power intent on distorting facts to suit their agendas, it is more important than ever that law and society scholars contribute to the public debate by engaging in multi-‐dimensional and interdisciplinary conversations. To this purpose, the Program Committee invites law and society scholars to present research on the main theme as well as other issues within socio-‐legal scholarship including law and religion, crime and punishment, legal history, Indigenous-‐non-‐Indigenous legal relations or any other area that is of interest. The Canadian Association of Law Teachers annual conference will be held June 5-‐7. The programs for both conferences on June 5th will be coordinated to encourage full participation.

Durisin, Emily van der Meulen, and Chris Bruckert eds, Red Light Labour: Sex Work Regulation, Agency, and Resistance. Vancouver: UBC Press, 2018. In 2013, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled unanimously that key Criminal Code provisions relating to sex work were unconstitutional. Canada v Bedford gave Parliament one year to update the laws. The landmark decision provoked renewed interest from researchers, policy-‐makers, news outlets, and the public but little new insight into sex work. Red Light Labour addresses Canada’s new legal regime regulating sex work with an advanced analysis of past and present policy approaches, and considers the ways in which laws and those who uphold them have constructed, controlled, and criminalized sex workers, their workspaces, colleagues, and clients. This collection also offers nuanced interpretations of various forms of commercial sexual labour that foreground the personal perspectives of workers and activists. The contributors highlight sex workers’ struggles for civic and social inclusion by considering their tactics, successes, and challenges as they work collaboratively and build alliances with diverse social movements.
