President’s Report President’s Report, Fall 2017 From June 20 to 23, 2017 the Canadian Law and Society met in Mexico City with the Law and Society Association. The theme was “Walls, Borders, and Bridges: Law and Society in an Inter- Connected World.” Around two hundred Canadian and CLSA scholars presented, and we began the organization for the events of the upcoming year. New to the Board of directors are Rachel Ariss, Preet Virdi, Kelly Hannah-Moffat, Pierre Pariseau-Legault, Sara Ross, Sida Liu, Joao Velloso, Kelly Gallagher-Mackay and Angela Lee. Angela is the new student representative. Lori Chambers rejoins the board after an absence of a few years, and Emily Snyder was re-elected. We thank our outgoing board members, Rashmee Singh, Nicole O’Byrne, Ravi Malhotra, Alana Klein and Kerri Scheer, for their service. Nicole O’Byrne’s term as vice-president also came to an end, and we are delighted and grateful to Emily Snyder for stepping into Nicole’s shoes. That makes two westerners on the board and the executive – but if you live in the west or the east, know that I’m scouting. Next year’s annual meeting will again be held with the Law and Society Association. We are meeting in Toronto from June 7-10, 2018. This year’s all-encompassing theme is “Law at the Crossroads: Le droit à la croisée des chemins.” Mariana Valverde, a longtime contributor to both organizations, has agreed to chair the program committee, and Audrey Macklin has agreed to chair local arrangements. Both have assembled strong committees. Ashley Rubin has agreed to take charge of the workshop for graduate students and early career scholars, which will be held in the two days before the main conference. One more exciting initiative is also afoot. In recent years, the CLSA has benefited from the energies of a growing number of francophone scholars. In accordance with this excellent developing, we are hoping to run a francophone Canadian law and society workshop over those same days, hopefully with an international outreach component as well. On January 26-28, 2018, our colleagues at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology will host a conference called “Technologies of Justice,” which will explore both how law comes to grips with technological change and law itself as a technology for justice or injustice. The CLSA hold its midwinter board afterward. The conference promises to be a great one, and the organizers are hoping for lots of participants. The final conference to bear in mind as you plan travels that extend beyond the Greater Toronto Area is the annual meeting of the Law and Society Association of Australia New Zealand (LSAANZ), which will be held at the University of Wollongong in December 2018. The Canadian Law and Society Association is planning to participate by supporting a certain amount of travel to the conference. Our annual conference in 2019 will be back with Congress, at UBC. You may have heard rumours of our archival project. Our treasurer, Maura Matesic, tells me that the society’s archival materials have been catalogued and digitized as part of York University’s Clara Thomas Archives. We are working with York’s University Archivist to develop policies and forms for public access. We continue to collect material for the archives, and encourage all members who 2

may have any CLSA materials to contact Maura (mmatesic@yorku.ca). The Legacy project architects also plan to video record brief interviews with key figures in the history of the CLSA, which could then be included in the digitized archives. The nticipated timeline for this project is November 2017 to the annual meeting in June 2018. Maura would be glad to hear from anyone interested in working on this project (or who may have student support to assist in facilitating it). We have one more new initiative to announce. Over the past many months we have put in place a new benefit for members. We have small pots of money available to support conferences that contribute to socio-legal scholarship in Canada and are likely to attract CLSA members as participants. Our first official round of conference support applications resulted in one award made to the Collectif de Recherche Droit et Société (CRDS) at UQÀM to support its November conference “Constraints and the Law.” The next round of application closes March 1, 2018. See the website (www.acds-clsa.org, under Activities/Conference Support) for more information. These are eventful, inspiring years.

Announcements Conferences and Calls for papers Technologies of Justice Faculty of Social Science and Humanities University of Ontario Institute of Technology Oshawa Ontario January 26-27, 2018 This conference will explore the theme of Technologies of Justice from a range of theoretical and methodological perspectives. We welcome studies of how law is coming to grips with technological change; moreover, we encourage scholarly work concerned with law itself as technology of (in)justice. Thus, the conference offers opportunities to explore what it means to do justice and to addresses innovations and challenges in the way justice is done. The symposium will take place Friday January 26th and Saturday 27th in downtown Oshawa, and the annual mid-winter board meeting of the CLSA is scheduled for the late afternoon of Saturday, January 27th. 10

Advertising/Publicité NEW TITLE FROM HART PUBLISHING! 20% DISCOUNT FOR MEMBERS OF THE CANADIAN LAW AND SOCIETY ASSOCIATION! The Right to Say No Marital Rape and Law Reform in Canada, Ghana, Kenya and Malawi Edited by Melanie Randall, Jennifer Koshan and Patricia Nyaundi Marital rape stands at the intersection of the socio-legal issues arising from both domestic violence and sexual assault. For centuries, women who suffered sexual assault perpetrated by their spouses had no legal recourse. A man’s conjugal rights included his right to have sexual intercourse with his wife regardless of whether she consented. This right has been recognised in law, and still is in some jurisdictions today. This book emerges from the research undertaken by an innovative, multi-country, academic, collaborative project dedicated to comparatively analysing the legal treatment of sexual assault in intimate relationships, with a view to challenging the legal impunity for and inadequate legal responses to this form of gendered violence. Melanie Randall is Associate Professor at Western University Faculty of Law, London, ON. Jennifer Koshan is Professor of Law at the Faculty of Law, University of Calgary, AB. Patricia Nyaundi is the CEO of Kenya National Commission on Human Rights.
